ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic Cape Community College staff members, students and alumni participated in the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by volunteering their time at Sister Jean’s Pantry & Kitchen and Atlantic City Rescue Mission on Monday, January 15.

The volunteers met at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City campus before dividing into two groups.

“It is important for our Atlantic Cape students and staff to participate in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service as it honors and commemorates Dr. King's legacy of service, while inspiring us to serve in our own way,” said Victor Moreno, senior manager, Special Projects, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.

At Sister Jean’s Pantry & Kitchen, which began serving hot meals at the First Presbyterian Church at Pennsylvania and Pacific avenues in September 1997 before moving to its current location at the former St. Monica’s Church at 108 North Pennsylvania Avenue in October 2020, the volunteers helped clean the dining room, folded donated clothing and toured the premises. “The importance of participating in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is to have our students engage with our surrounding community and to understand the importance of giving back collectively,” said Lisa Givens, assistant director, Student Engagement.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day officially became a national holiday in 1986. Eight years later, in 1994, January 15, the day of Dr. King’s birth in 1924, became a national day of service where Americans are encouraged to volunteer their time in their local communities.
